Maybe a Killer Lurks Around the Corner

Killers lurk around someone's corner, they have to--could it be yours?

Do mystery writers spend time looking at the people around them wondering if someone is a potential murderer?

Is the guy behind you in the check-out line at the movies planning how he might do away with his wife? Or is he just wondering how he let her talking him into bringing 5 little boys to see CARS?

What about the strange kid lurking around the parking lot of the 99 cent store seeming to have an unhealthy interest in the parked cars? Maybe he's been paid to take someone out and he's wandering around trying to boost his courage. Or maybe he's just trying to find an unlocked car with interesting items inside to steal.

The fellow who always has a way of staring lecherously at any woman who comes near him? Is he a rapist just looking for a ripe opportunity? Or is he just a sex deprived male hoping to get this thrills anyway he can?

The grumpy old man who growls at the kids if they come near his house, could he have a horrible secret buried in his basement?

All a mystery writers has to do is look around to find potential killers to write about. What about you? Is there a killer lurking around your corner?

Maybe there's one living in the crawlspace of my home. I have heard scratching in there.

Love this post. Everytime I go somewhere with my family I evaluate the locations potential for a murder site.

I'm.. lurking around the corner, Nancy. So watch out! I wouldn't be concerned about the teen or the guy in the check-out line. You need to keep your eyes on the writers around here. We're always the ones dreaming up ways to kill, chop, grate, mince, grind and macerate. But, unlike the other writers out there, I don't need a corner. I have a piece of paper and I have a pen. And If you only knew the things I can do with them...

Do you carry a roll of crime scene tape with you...just in case, Jeff? ;-)

Like you, I'm a people watcher. Some could say it borders on voyeurism. Others might just call me the nosy neighbor.

In my defense, I can't help it. I'm a writer.

If I see a couple arguing, my mind immediately goes into story mode and suddenly they're arguing over which one is going to kill the woman's husband.

If my neighbor is in his back yard digging in the early morning light, I wonder if he just buried his mother-in-law. Or maybe one of those irritating Bible-thumpers interrupted his morning coffee.

Simply said, I don't need a corner to worry about. There's a whole big world out there. And like you said, Jeff, killers lurk somewhere.

In all seriousness, it's kind of scary to think that every killer has a family that they came from. They may have a husband or wife. They may have kids. They most likely have neighbors. They might have coached your son's soccer team or led your daughter's cheerleading squad.

Now don't even get me started on the ice cream man...

I work at a campground. Transients who sleep in their cars and carry axes ... need I say more?
