Heading Off On Vacation

We're soon going to be driving from California to Sedona AZ in a motor home. We're going on a "camping" vacation with daughter and son-in-law. I have two book events in Sedona: at the library one evening and at the Well Read Coyote on Saturday. The rest of the time we're going sight-seeing and hanging out.

What does this do with criminal minds at work, you ask?

I can't help but be reminded of one of the scariest movies I ever saw. Can't remember the name of it, but some people in a motor home were being pursued by witches who always seemed to find them no matter the stopping place. It did not end well.

Hopefully, the witches (and all the other bad things out there) will leave us alone.

I am taking a manuscript along to edit and another to go over and see how I want to move along with it.

Sedona is a great place to re-energize.

A Steve Winslow zinger.
Here's an author who can write! He has enough novels out you'd expect that, right? This was my first Steve Winslow mystery. It won't be my last. Fine, distinct interesting characters. Limited cast. A creative defense attorney hard at work for a surprisingly uncooperative client. First she's fired after accusations of theft from her employer, then one of the owners of the firm is shot to death and Winslow's client is arrested. Watching this lawyer both in and out of court is a real treat. The dialog crackles, the pace is next to pell mell and the explanations are precise. There is a good deal of detail, especially at the end. I would have preferred a more succinct closing to the novel with less sniping between attorneys, but it was a small price to pay for a fast, well done story.

Jest For Fun - April Fools Mystery

Plotting mysteries has never been easier.

It's been almost two month now since I wrote and produced the mystery 'Jest For Fun' to help raise awareness of the Radium Hot Springs Public Library. The best part was that I used a book I am writing on how to plot a mystery cluetrail to write the show and it made the plotting so much easier!

The evening was a smashing success - as in we got to smash eggs on each other and wrap people up in toilet paper and other fun pranks.

"Did You Write These Books?"

It's almost summer, which is my most active promotion time. Michigan gets lots of tourists from June to August, so bookstores and other venues are willing to give me a shot at selling my books. What I find funny is a question I get a lot. I'm standing behind a table. There's a sign that says, "Author Peg Herring: Book Signing Today". And about once an hour someone asks me, "Did you write these books?"
I know, I shouldn't snicker at people who might spend money to own my work. But I would like to ask them why I'd be standing behind a table of Peg Herring's books if I was not Peg Herring. (A rabid fan, determined to make Peg a best-selling author, maybe?)
Other great questions writers get include "Where are the bathrooms in this place?" "Will you sign this book if I buy it?" and, of course, "Where do they keep the James Patterson books?"
Still, it's fun to meet readers, talk about books, and maybe, just maybe, meet someone who says, "Oh, I heard about this book! Someone said it was really good!"
Yay! And the bathrooms are just down that hallway.

How Long Will it Be Before Someone Makes a Movie?

I'm talking about the killing of Osama Bin Laden. It certainly has all the elements of a thriller.

The more we learn about how it all came about it's fascinating to read about the gathering of clues and how long it took to actually pinpoint where the #1 most wanted had been hiding out for such a long time.

I can see the movie following the personal lives of the Navy Seals who actually stormed the compound so that the movie goer will have true compassion for those who actually did the deed. I suspect that we'll also see some of the intensive training these men go through.

No doubt somewhere in the movie will be the airplanes crashing into the Twin Towers in order to remind us why we (meaning our government) wanted to find Osama Bin Laden and do away with him.

We'll probably get to see how Osama Bin Laden's hiding place was finally discovered and how plans came together to go in and get him.

And perhaps it will end with shots of people in the streets in front of the white house shouting USA! USA! Or will it?

How would you makes this movie?
